The fourth Social Enterprise in Glasgow report has been published by Glasgow Social Enterprise Network (GSEN). The report details the scale and economic impact of social enterprises in Glasgow.

Following on from the release of the Social Enterprise in Scotland Census 2019 GSEN is delighted to launch the 4th report which provides an overview of how this information translates in Glasgow.

Having worked with Social Value Lab since commissioning their services in 2013 to undertake the first ever evidence based census of social enterprise activity in Glasgow, GSEN has retained this commitment in 2015, 2017 and now again in 2019 to help paint a comprehensive picture of the social enterprise sector in the city.

At the launch event, held at the Pearce Institute on Thursday 31 October, GSEN Director Elizabeth Docherty, highlighted the continued cross party commitment from Glasgow City Council to the support and development of social enterprise including the recent launch of the Glasgow Social Enterprise Action Plan, and proposed inclusion of social enterprise as a key sector within a refresh of the city's economic strategy.

With the vision that 'by championing social enterprise, where economic activity works for people and profit is used for social and environmental change, Glasgow will be recognised as the social enterprise capital of Scotland by 2028', we look forward to working with members, Glasgow City Council, partners and stakeholders on fulfilling our ambition for Glasgow.

The research provides a comparison of 2019 to previous years findings with headlines including:

• 811 social enterprises currently operating in Glasgow
• 43% of social enterprises are based in the 20% most deprived areas of Glasgow
• 63% of Glasgow’s social enterprises led by women
• 63% have a social objective of improving Heath and Wellbeing
• 21,632 FTE employees
• £634m GVA to the Glasgow Economy
• £918m income from trading
