Join the Glasgow Eco Trust Community Green Team as a volunteer Bike Mechanic in our De'ils On Wheels community bike workshop.

Purpose of Role

De’ils on Wheels provides a range of services for the local community including bike servicing and repair, Dr Bike MOT checks, bike sales, cycle skills training and much more. The workshop assistant will gain experience of bike maintenance and repair by supporting our Bike Mechanic and volunteer bike workshop assistants in the De’ils on Wheels community bike workshop with tasks including servicing bikes, serving customers and recording and cataloguing donated bikes. De'ils On Wheels is a Revolve accredited reuse centre.

Task Descriptio

Supporting the Senior Bike Mechanic to undertake a range of bike maintenance activities including:

  • Stripping bikes for scrap and spare parts
  • Keeping the bike stock in good order
  • Servicing bikes as per our standard operating procedure
  • Undertaking Dr Bike checks

Skills and Personal Qualities

This is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in bikes who’d like to learn more about the practical side of bike maintenance and repair and the day to day running of a well-used community bike project. We’re looking for people with the following qualities:

  • Committed
  • Hardworking
  • Reasonable level of fitness
  • Experience of bike maintenance and/or a recognised bike maintenance qualification

Support and Supervision

Regular support and supervision will be provided by Glasgow Eco Trust staff. Protective equipment will be provided. Volunteers will be encouraged to access any relevant training delivered by Glasgow Eco Trust and partners e.g Cycle Ride Leader training. Volunteers may be able to progress on to the role of volunteer bike mechanic and will be supported through cycle maintenance training.

Time Commitment Required

There are weekly opportunities on the following days and we would ask that you commit to at least 2 hours per session.

  • Wednesdays from 11am to 5pm
  • Thursdays from 1pm to 7pm
  • Fridays from 10am to 2pm

  • The volunteer role will be based at De’ils On Wheels Community Bike Workshop, 40 Kingsway Court, Scotstoun G14 9SU
  • We can pay volunteers expenses which can include travel and lunch costs
